The most visited Great Barrier Reef islands make up just a small percentage of the 900+ islands and coral cays that are scattered all along the Reef, and several of them are home to some of the world's most popular tropical island resorts.
The majority of mainland-based visitors to the Reef will visit at least one island resort during their stay, while other people will base themselves on an island and only visit the mainland for a day trip.
It's very easy to see why the islands of the Great Barrier Reef are such an attraction - fine white sandy beaches, crystal clear warm waters and easy access by sea or air are all part of the package that these islands have to offer.
Mini tropical rainforests can also be found on the larger islands and many island beaches have their own coral fringing reefs just a few meters offshore - perfect for snorkelling!
Accommodation on the islands varies and is spread right across the board, from basic campsites and backpacking hostels right through to world class 5 star resorts with complete exclusivity.
The more popular Reef island resorts such as Lizard and Lady Elliot have airstrips, but boat trips and helicopters are the only way in and out of many of the smaller islands.

The Great Barrier Reef islands make perfect bases for diving holidays and this is (not surprisingly) the most popular activity.
Other people may honeymoon on one of the islands or just use it as a base for bush-walking and nature viewing, or for pure and simple relaxation!
Below are just a few of the most visited islands of the Reef (and visited by me). Others not listed include Orpheus Island, Green Island and Hamilton Island, all of which I'll write about once I've been to them ;-)
